How MeetClara keeps calls honest, safe and private
This page explains how Clara, MeetClara's AI phone companion for older adults, handles honesty, safety and privacy on every call. Each answer below says what is true today.
Does Clara tell my parent she's an AI?
Clara is designed to open every call by telling your parent she's an AI companion from MeetClara, and every voicemail she leaves says so too. Until your parent has heard her full introduction, she also says she's not a person and that she records their chats for the family. If asked whether she's a real person, she's designed to say she's an AI.
What does Clara do when she isn't sure she's heard a story before?
Clara is designed to avoid inventing details, and when your parent asks whether they've already told her a story she can't find, she is designed to answer "Maybe — either way, I'm listening." In our own testing she still gets this wrong in both directions: she has denied stories she was told, and has said a story came from an earlier call when it was told minutes before. The recording and transcript are the record to trust.
Is Clara a medical or emergency service?
MeetClara is a companion service — not a medical service, and not a medical alert system or a replacement for 911. Clara isn't a reminder service: she won't call at a set time just to remind, and she can't confirm a pill was taken.
Are calls recorded, and does my parent know?
Every call is recorded — that's how your family keeps the stories. Our privacy policy asks the family member who schedules calls to tell their parent the calls are recorded and to get their agreement where the law requires it. Clara tells them too: she's designed to say she records their chats when she first introduces herself, and to say yes if they ask whether she's recording.
Who can hear the recordings?
Only people invited to your family's circle can see the calls in the app. Everyone in it can read the transcripts; you choose who can also play recordings, change the schedule, add notes, or invite others. Recordings are kept in private storage and play through signed links that expire after an hour, and each request for a link is logged. Profile photos are stored at addressable links rather than signed ones.
How long do you keep recordings, and how do I delete them?
In the iPhone app (coming to Android), you can delete your account in Settings: Clara stops calling right away, and the account is permanently erased about a week later — email support@meetclara.org within that week if you change your mind. Before anything is deleted, you can ask us for a copy of every recording, transcript and story. We keep recordings until you ask us to delete them or your account is deleted, unless you first hand a loved one's calls to another family member.
Do you sell our data or use it for ads?
We don't sell or rent your family's data.
Which companies help run the calls?
Our privacy policy lists every company that helps run the calls and what each one receives.
Is MeetClara covered by HIPAA?
MeetClara is a consumer service for families; it isn't set up for HIPAA business associate agreements.
