What Clara does and doesn't do
What Clara does
- Clara calls your parent on the phone they already have — landline or mobile — with nothing to install.
- You choose the days and times Clara calls, and you can change or pause the schedule in the app anytime.
- Calls can be life-story conversations or lighter check-ins, set day by day.
- You can also schedule a one-time call.
- If your parent misses a call, Clara leaves a short voicemail saying when she'll call next — or that she'll call again soon, when nothing is scheduled yet.
- Your parent can call Clara back on her number — you choose whether she answers anytime, for a while after a missed call, or not at all.
- Scheduled calls aim for about 20 minutes and follow your parent's lead; calls your parent makes can run up to 45 minutes by default.
- Tell Clara what's on your mind — a check-up, a birthday, a worry — and she's designed to bring it up naturally when the moment feels right.
- Clara picks up threads from earlier calls.
- Clara is designed to avoid inventing details, and when your parent asks whether they've already told her a story she can't find, she is designed to answer "Maybe — either way, I'm listening." In our own testing she still gets this wrong in both directions: she has denied stories she was told, and has said a story came from an earlier call when it was told minutes before. The recording and transcript are the record to trust.
- If your parent shares news — health, a loss, a worry — Clara is designed to stay with that first; the plan waits.
- After every call your family can play the recording, read the transcript and a short written story, and see a gentle note on how your parent sounded.
- Tap any line of the transcript and the recording jumps to that moment.
- In the iPhone app, ask a question and get an answer drawn from your parent's own calls (coming to Android).
- Only people invited to your family's circle can see the calls in the app. Everyone in it can read the transcripts; you choose who can also play recordings, change the schedule, add notes, or invite others.
- Every call is recorded — that's how your family keeps the stories.
- On the first call, Clara is designed to say who she is, which family member asked her to call, and that she writes down what your parent shares for the family.
- Email privacy@meetclara.org and we'll send a one-time code to the email address on your account. Reply with that code, and we'll delete the account within 30 days.
What Clara doesn't do
- MeetClara is a companion service — not a medical service, and not a medical alert system or a replacement for 911.
- Clara doesn't call 911 or send your family a real-time alert. If your parent mentions a fall or seems distressed, a note may appear in that call's summary in the app after the call.
- Clara isn't a reminder service: she won't call at a set time just to remind, and she can't confirm a pill was taken.
- Clara adds conversation to the week; she isn't a replacement for family, friends or care.
- Your parent never installs, charges or learns anything.
- Clara speaks English.
- MeetClara calls US phone numbers only.
- MeetClara is a consumer service for families; it isn't set up for HIPAA business associate agreements.
- We don't sell or rent your family's data.
- Connections between our systems are encrypted (TLS), and the database is encrypted at rest. The phone network itself isn't encrypted end to end.
